Greetings from Mont Vernon Congregational Church

This July marks the 125th Anniversary of the dedication of Mont Vernon’s “New Meetinghouse,” the current sanctuary of the Mont Vernon Congregational Church (United Church of Christ) at 4 South Main Street.

The Congregation will celebrate this milestone on Sunday, July 11, 2021 during a  9:30 AM  worship service, and you are invited! (Please note the earlier summer hour).

This worship service will include a retelling of how the “New Meetinghouse” came to be built, with enthusiastic town-wide support, and will feature a slide show of its architect, George Wilton Lewis’s other designs, including churches, mansions and apartment buildings across New England.

The unique architectural and acoustic features of the “New Meetinghouse” will be noted, and attention will be drawn to its impressive stained-glass windows, with their stories being told. Elements of the original July 7, 1896 Dedication Service will be part of this Anniversary Service, including two hymns written specifically for the occasion.  The Sanctuary, Round Room, Women’s Parlor and restored Pastor’s Office will be available for viewing after worship.

In his 1907 History of the Town of Mont Vernon, New Hampshire, local historian Charles J. Smith describes the “New Meetinghouse” as “one of the chief attractions of the village” and “one of the loveliest in the country.”  He was right on both counts! Please join the congregation in celebrating this milestone of church and Mont Vernon history on Sunday, July 11, 2021 at 9:30 AM. (Please note: for the health and safety of all, worship services are socially distanced and participants are asked to mask).
